Pune, Maharashtra – Saurabh Gaikwad, son of former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Bandu Gaikwad, has been accused of causing a serious accident while driving under the influence of alcohol in Pune’s Keshavnagar area. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening on the Manjri-Mundhwa road.
According to police reports, Saurabh was driving his Harrier SUV in the wrong direction when he collided head-on with a poultry tempo coming from the opposite direction. The crash injured both the tempo driver, Raja Shaikh, and his assistant. They were rushed to a private hospital by local bystanders and are reported to be in stable condition.
CCTV footage of the accident shows the SUV racing down a narrow single-lane road before crashing into the tempo, causing it to spin and skid. The impact was so severe that some chickens from the tempo were thrown onto the road.
Saurabh, who fled the scene immediately after the crash, is facing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicle Act. The Hadapsar police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by a local resident.
This incident follows a recent case where a drunk minor driving a Porsche killed two techies in Pune. The 17-year-old accused in that case was recently granted bail by the Bombay High Court.
Bandu Gaikwad, Saurabh’s father, is a prominent leader in Sharad Pawar’s faction of the NCP. This accident has drawn attention to the ongoing issue of drunk driving and its consequences, particularly involving individuals connected to political figures.
